{ Christmas Sugar Scrubs }

Whoa! SIX days til Christmas!

WHAT??? I know, right? SIX days!

What I've got for you here is a quick and easy last minute gift. You know you've forgotten someone!

These are inexpensive and oh so lucious. Good enough to eat, but don't. I mean, you COULD, it's all foodstuffs, but...

I've made you 5 different versions of sugar scrub.

All start with the same basic recipe: 1/4 cup of (solid) coconut oil to 1 cup of sugar. After that, the sky is the limit!

These all smell AH-MAZ-ING. I'm not messing around here. Delicious.

So, make some to give away. You can get a lot out of a jar of coconut oil! A lot!

Or... make some for yourself. Or both ;)

So, the scrubs I made today are:

Candy Cane

Hot Cocoa

Pumpkin Pie

Snickerdoodle

and

Gingerbread Cookie

All of the scrubs make approx  1/2 pint. (I got slightly over 2 of these adorable 1/4 pint jars per recipe). You can easily double, triple, etc. any of the recipes.

Please note when using scrubs in the bathtub/shower, that it can get a little slick. The same applies when using on feet. Be careful!

Always test in a small spot of your skin for sensitivity. That said, I have extremely sensitive skin and have never had an issue. Everyone is different though!

To use, scoop a bit of scrub into your palm, then rub on arms, legs, etc in a circular motion. Rinse and pat to dry. You'll feel soft and smooth and smell like Christmas!

Note on the Cocoa Scrub. While this is my favorite smelling scrub here, it is also the messiest. Be prepared for chocolate everywhere ;)

I've also made you some sweet little tags. To use, right click on the file below and 'save image as'.

Just jar up your scrub, add a tag, and bam, you've got a great gift!

Happy Christmas!

{ Sweet, Simple Christmas Tree Cupcakes }

As the Christmas holiday closes in, we all begin to panic, if even just a little.

There's just SO much to do. Every year I tell myself I'm NOT GOING TO DO ALL OF THAT, and yet, every year I still do it.

Case in point, Gingerbread Houses. Now, I do it the 'easy' way (see here), but I said I wasn't doing them this year. Yet, what did I find myself doing at 9 pm the night  prior to the party? Making Gingerbread Houses. Christmas comes but once a year. What's an hour of my time and a few dollars in candy? It's a tradition, after all!

I often think about how calm Christmas would be if I didn't host & attend parties. If I didn't bake, and bake, and bake, and candy make. If I didn't do gift boxes of treats, etc. It would be so calm. So peaceful. So... BORING, and SO not me.

So, I go. I do.

It's Christmastime, after all, and I love a good tradition!

One of my favorite traditions at Christmas is watching the Harry Potter movies with the best Christmas scenes. No, I don't watch the whole series at Christmas, I pick and choose. Goblet of Fire for the Yule Ball, Order of the Phoenix for Christmas at Grimmauld Place, Half Blood Prince for Christmas at The Burrow (until those dang D.E. ruined it!). The best of the best, is, of course Sorcerer's Stone. It makes me feel oh, so merry! I love all of the trees in the Great Hall. After watching the other day, I decided to make these cupcakes.

They are the sweetest little Christmas tree cupcakes evah. Totally cute and way easy. Don't tell though. What people don't know won't hurt them.

You just bake up any cupcake flavor of your choosing, frost with a little white, sprinkle on a little sanding sugar, pipe on a little green swirly tree, decorate, and... done!

You can make the trees any shade of green you choose (or, hey, get funky with some colored trees!), but I made mine a more 'natural' shade of green. To achieve this color I used (Wilton Gel food coloring) Leaf Green, Kelly Green, and wee bit of black.

Me gusta.

Hagrid would approve.

So, be it calm or be it hectic, I hope your Christmas is classically YOU.

Tina

Christmas Tree Cupcakes

needed:

Cupcakes, baked and cooled
Buttercream
Green food coloring
piping bag
Wilton 1M tip
White sanding sugar
Decorations

Make sure your buttercream is sort of stiff. You may want to add a little more powdered sugar to your normal recipe.

Scoop out some white and set aside.

Tint the rest to the shade of green you prefer.

Frost cupcakes with the white buttercream. Sprinkle the edges with white sanding sugar.

Using your green icing, in the center of the cupcake, pipe your tree. Make 3 swirls, then lift up. Look! A tree! <3

Decorate as desired. Sprinkle with more white sanding sugar or powdered sugar, add silver dragees
or colored nonpareils,or other sprinkles, etc! Leave top plain, or add a star, snowflake, sixlet, etc.

{ Peppermint Crunch Bark }

Hello Decemeber, hello Christmas!

I'm SO excited to see you.

Yeah, I have eleventy million things to do, but I loooooooooooove you, and you are finally here!

One of my favorite things to do at Christmas is bake with my awesome friend, Lori and also with my boy. Lori and I make trays of treats for teachers, neighbors, family members, and other friends. It's always an exhausting but great day. Together we make what could be a chore into a great time! Love me some Lori time!  Bean loves to make Buckeyes and Cake Balls, so we always do that together. Also, rolled and decorated sugar cookies because what is more Christmas than that? The boy LOVES traditions, and I love that.

I know that Peppermint Bark has been done and done again, but this is just a wee bit different.

This adds a layer of Andes Peppermint Crunch chips in the middle. I love the flavor it gives, but even more, I love the color. It makes a classic, lovely Christmas treat just that much better.

Isn't the red festive? I'm pretty smitten.

These are totally going on the Christmas trays this year!

Delicious, easy, and inexpensive to pack little boxes up as gifts for friends, family, co-workers, etc!

Tina

Peppermint Crunch Bark
by Tina @ Sugar Bean Bakers

6 ounces white chocolate*
6 ounces semi-sweet chocolate*
6 ounces Andes Peppermint Crunch chips
2 candy canes, crushed
1 Tablespoon white sanding sugar
1 Tablespoon red sanding sugar

*Chips work great, but for even better flavor, use a higher quality chocolate, chopped into small pieces

Add crushed candy canes & sanding sugars to a small bowl and set aside.

For instructions on melting chocolate, follow this link: How to Melt Chocolate.

Line a baking pan with parchment paper. Melt semi-sweet chocolate. Pour onto pan and spread out. Tap on counter to remove any bubbles. Allow to harden by placing in the fridge (about 20 mins) or freezer (about 10 minutes).

Melt Peppermint Crunch. Pour on top of the hardened chocolate layer. Tap to remove bubbles. Return to fridge/freezer to harden.

Melt white chocolate layer. Spread on top of Peppermint Crunch layer. Tap to remove bubbles. Immediately top with crushed candy cane/sugar mixture.

Allow to fully harden. Cut or break into pieces. Store in airtight container.

Makes approx 1 1/2 pounds

This can be made in any quantity as long as the chocolate/Peppermint Crunch portions are even (adjust candy canes accordingly).

You can add a bit of peppermint extract if you wish, if you prefer it a bit more pepperminty. I like the mild peppermint flavor that the Peppermint Crunch adds.

{Christmas Look Back, Post 2}

I'm back with another look into past Christmases (or posts I think would be good for Christmas).

I mentioned in my last post that I was panicked. Well, I still am, but I'm slightly better. I've managed to get 75% of the shopping done. This week, however, holds shopping, baking, grocery shopping, an orthodontist appointment, and TWO parties. Yay?

Tis the Season, right?

I'm trying to remember to "Relax, Re-evaluate, and Remember the reason".

It's going, well... it's going. I won't even say it's going OK, but I'm trying here, folks!

That said, let me show you some posts I think you'll like this Christmas!

One of the easiest and best cheeseballs ever. You can throw this together in about 2 minutes.

Chocolate Peppermint Cupcakes

These are a Christmas version of one of my most popular recipes on the blog, Chocolate Mint Cupcakes. The glaze is made with Andes Chocolate Mint candy.

Buckeye Bites

Buckeye Bites are the most popular recipe on my blog. They have been for over a year now. They are quick and easy to whip up and great for gift giving as well!

Snickerdoodle Cupcakes

Snickerdoodles are my favorite cookies and although I could eat them at any time of the year, their cinnamony sweetness always reminds me of Christmas. These Snickerdoodle cupcakes, some of my favorites cuppies I've ever made, therefore make me think they belong in this post.

Honey Vanilla Brown Sugar Scrub

A very easy scrub to make up as gifts. All the ingredients are probably already in your kitchen. Sugar Scrubs are very expensive, but this one sure isn't. Mix up, put into a jar, and add a gift tag. Done.

Red Velvet Bûche de Noël

I'd always wanted to make a Yule Log, and last year was the year. This post shows how it's much easier than appears AND how you can screw things up and still make a gorgeous dessert.

Christmas Tree Starburst Effect Tutorial

Want gorgeous photos of your tree? In this post I tell how to achieve the 'starburst' or 'twinkle' effect. Get photos of your tree you will always treasure.

A quick and easy treat that is perfect for parties... or Santa.

Homemade Marshmallows & Gift Ideas

Homemade marshmallows are MUCH easier than you'd think, and really, quite a lot of fun. Follow this link for gift ideas with or without making your own marshies!

That's all for now, friends! Hopefully I will be back soon with more!

{Caramel Crunch Party Mix}

I'm panicking here, my friends.

PANICKING. There's 16 days til Christmas and I've got so, so much to do. I've got to finish up my shopping, of course, but I also do all the Christmas shopping for my almost 94 year old grandmother. I've got events for youth group, a party here at my house, an orthodontist appointment, holiday baking/candy making, cleaning, wrapping.... Well, you all know the drill. Normally I am way further in my shopping than I am. I started in August, so, you'd think I'd be further along, but no.

So, quick and easy is definitely my friend. This is a very easy snack, great for parties. I'll be adding this one to my holiday giving trays.

This is a play on Caramel Corn and Chex Mix. And, well, it's delicious!

This mix is based off of my Caramel Corn.

You can throw in extras if you like too, of course. Nuts, sprinkles, etc. Yum.

Here's the down low:

Make up some caramel, pour it over the cereal, bake for 45 mins, stirring every 15. Let cool, break apart clumps, add in pretzels and M&Ms. Done.

Delicious.

I hope to be back before Christmas, but if I'm not, you'll know why!

The panic got me!

Tina

{Cinnamon Streusel Topped Pumpkin Bread}

I'd apologize for what I'm about to talk about, but I'm not sorry, so... No.

DID YOU HEAR??????????? THERE ARE GOING TO BE NEW HARRY POTTER UNIVERSE MOVIES! GAH. SIRIUSLY. I. CAN'T. EVEN.

Practically the second it was announced, my niece posted on my timeline and asked if it was true. So, OK. I love two things about this. 1. that I've made excellent nerd minions in my nieces and child and 2. I'm like the leading authority on all things nerddom to them.

I immediately started iMessaging Darla. She wasn't responding. I was losing my mind. FINALLY she responded (her iPad wasn't making alert noises! Dumb Apple, this is ALL CAPS IMPORTANT).

Yes, her iPad's name is the Marauder's Map. Mine is the Monster Book of Monsters. What?!

Any Potter fan will know that there have been rumors, "official" news, leaks, etc all saying there would be new Potter books, etc... never true. We've gotten our hopes up only to have them dashed far too many times. This, is ALL TRUE. A series of movies (with all the screenplays being penned by good ole JK Rowling herself) starring the character Newt Scamander will be an expansion of the Wizarding World. Not techinally Harry Potter movies at all... guess what? No one cares! Wizards, witches, magic, adventure, Fantastic Beasts... and where to find them! YESSSSSSSSS.

So, we continued to freak out. Then Darla said that she was weakened by the excitement and needed a snack. I thought that was an excellent idea.

This is her snack. She posted the photo on her instagram.

My snack? Well, it was also tea. And bread. Pumpkin bread. This bread in fact, but wait.. there's MORE.

Then SHE messaged ME with news

We are going to Orlando next September. We'll be doing Disney and, of course, Potter World (The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and Universal Studios). There was always speculation that the new London part of WWoHP would be done in the summer. We were PRETTY SURE that we would be in the clear and able to see it, but honestly, NOT being there in time was a huge fear. Especially for Darla who is flying back from The Netherlands to go! So, confirmation that it will open Spring 2014 when we aren't going until Fall 2014? AWE-to the-SOME.

So, anyway, back to the bread... (Finally, right? Whatever.. POTTER!!!!!!!!).

What better thing to make for Potter than pumpkin....

This gorgeous, glorious, fall scented, flavor packed bread is a creation of none other than the crazed Potter fan above, Darla.

Just look at that wonderful streusel!

Yuuuuuuuuuuuuum.

This is a quick and easy recipe. It's also quite large. It makes 3 full sized loaves.

You'll want to give two away. Otherwise you'll eat it. ALL. It's that good.

Mine are definitely finding new homes today. I really want to still fit into the seat on the Forbidden Journey next year at Potter World!

So, um.. I promise not to talk about Harry Potter for a while. It'll be a struggle for me, but I know I've had an influx of Potter posts lately (sorry, not sorry).

Well.... it most likely won't be about Potter anyway ;)

Until then...

Tina (a very, very happy Potter fan)

P.S. (See all my Potter posts here)
P.P.S. If you haven’t already,  you can ‘like’ my Facebook page here, and follow me on twitter here, and you can follow me on instagram here.

Recipe:

The only variations I made were:
I didn't use the pepitas & I sprinkled the loaves with a bit of brown sugar fresh from the oven. This gave them a most excellent crunch when cooled.

{ Honey Vanilla Brown Sugar Scrub }

So, the Bean is recovered from the flu, YAY... but, last night he started Driver's Ed.

WHUT??

That is dumb. Where does time go?? Yesterday he looked like this.

Right? 1998 was NOT 15 years ago. That. Is. NOT. Possible. The end.

However, for some reason, I was out taking him to Driver's Ed last night. And it was snowing.
Big snowing. Like, flakes the size of kittens. It was In.SANE. No snow plows to be seen, so, on about 75% of the 20+  min. drive, I was laying the first set of tracks.

FUN.

Now, we really didn't get much snow, only about 2", but plowing through that in my car was rather stressful.

However, I made it there in "only" 50 minutes.

Then, I had to stop and have coffee, because stress. It was good. White Raspberry Mocha, thankyouverymuch.

This is the road in front of my house.

No, I wasn't driving at the time.

Now, the snow is all melty, because Ohio weather is stoopid, and I have to take the Bean back to Driver's Ed tonight. And tomorrow. And next week.

So, I'm grumpy, and I should have made chocolate, but I didn't.

This is not a food post.

I'm sorry.

Wait, not really. Cause this is good stuff.

I have painfully, chronically, perpetually dry sky.

People who say dry skin is better than oily skin do not have painfully, chronically, perpetually dry skin.

But, I didn't have acne in high school, so, maybe it's not that bad.

No, no, wait yes it is. haha.

This stuff is amazing on my dry, cracked heels and elbows.

This is a cheap alternative to expensive sugar scrubs & you probably have all of the ingredients in your pantry right now.

It couldn't be simpler.

Just mix Brown Sugar & Cane Sugar (also called turbinado sugar or sugar in the raw), olive oil (or melted & cooled coconut oil), honey, and vanilla together.

Store in a jar. You can buy fancy jars, or recycle. This used to be a mushroom jar.

This is super great and inexpensive for gifts!

This is the consistency you should have.

To use, use as you would any other sugar scrub, and save dollars while you are doing it!

If you are using this on your feet, please DO TAKE CARE. The oil will make them a little slippery until you dry them off!

Now, to the next on my list, is Coconut Oil. Coconut Oil has about 1 million uses.

No, seriously, it's the new wonder drug. Wonder oil? Wonder product?

Anyway, here is a listing I found for some uses. Now, some sound a leeeeeeeetle sketchy to me, but I'm not suggesting you try all of them, just saying, there's a list. Points ----------> List.

The problem with Coconut Oil for a moisturizer is that it is hard and you have to scoop it out. There is an easy fix to that.

A mixer.

Just plop the amount you want in the mixer and whip for a few minutes. It will become a light, fluffy cream.

Now, it's easy to use as a moisturizer!

Coconut Oil will liquify at 77 degrees F, so make sure it doesn't get too warm.

You can whip in a little Aloe, Vitamin E liquid, or some essential oils for scent, but this is pure Coconut Oil and that works just dandy.

So, there you are.

After the watching the pretty snow melt all day, and having to drive Mr. Bean back and forth to Driver's Ed, I feel I deserve a little pampering.

And chocolate would have been nice.

{ Chokladbollar: Swedish Chocolate Balls }

Do you know how to say that word up there?

Yeah, me either.

I've gone through my phonics trying to work it out. Chalk-lad-bowl-are?
Chock-laud-bow-ler? Chuck-lah-boo-lur?

I have no idea, but it sure is fun to try. Go ahead, you know you wanna.

You ever notice some words sound weird if you really think about it?

Ok, if you REALLY think about it, MOST words sound weird.

Muck. Burlap. Squirrel. Toes. Corn. Squishy. Purple. Skillet. Turtle. Chair.

Even weird sounds weird.

Weird.

ANYWAY... (<---------how weird does that word sound? Oh my gosh. I think I need medication. med-ih-ka-shen).

Recently, while trolling the web for ideas to use the Pearl Sugar I had left from my Vanilla Bean Liege Waffles, I came upon this little Swedish treat. Now, actually, this takes Swedish Pearl Sugar (Swedish recipe, Swedish sugar...go figure) and I only had Belgium, but hey, we'll make do eh?  You really don't need pearl sugar at all, it's just a fun finish.

These are quick and easy. No cooking. No baking. Made from things you probably already have at home.

SCORE.

I found them on the blog (blog. LOL), She Simmers. Fun site. I'd never been there before. I love her category listings on the side. Check 'em out.

She got the recipe from a reader of her's named Mikael, who is Swedish. This is his recipe for Chokladbollar, so they are authentic Swedish Chocolate Balls, not Americanized*.... yet. See below ;)

This took 2 minutes to mix up and about 10 minutes to roll. That's IT.

The Chokladbollar have a yummy mocha taste to them. The Bean, not a coffee fan, labeled them "Interesting", but good. "Just interesting" (his words).

I like 'em. Yes, yes I do.

*However.... Being a born and bred Buckeye, I'm already plotting to remove the coffee and and insert some peanut butter. Or, hey, maybe some Nutella.

Yes. I think so.

You can roll these in Pearl Sugar, regular sugar, or coconut. I enjoyed the coconut most.

I also used Pure Cane Sugar on some of them.

You could use colored sanding sugars as well.

These would be great for holiday get togethers & for gift giving!

Click here to go to She Simmers for Mikael's recipe!

Chaulk- LAD- Buller?

Bueller?

Bueller?

Anyone?

Bueller?

{ Banana Nutter Poochies: Treats for Pups }

When I'm in the kitchen, I have an audience.

Pretty much always.

I don't mind when they sit and watch, but they are not allowed inside the kitchen walkway.

Tripping hazard. Bad for me, bad for them.

So, they sit past the bar and watch.

And wait.

Just in case something hits the floor.

Our dogs, Jingle Bella (laying), and Luna Rosa Lovegood (nerd name!) are 8 & 4 respectively.

Fun story about Jingle (who was a Christmas present for the Bean when he was in 1st grade). She's camera shy. I'm NOT joking. Get out the camera, and she's GONE. It's totally weird. Who knew animals could be camera shy??

Luna, on the other hand, could care less. You'll see a lot of her in my Instagram feed, because, well, she's there. She's a big ole lapdog. Cannot be without person. She's my shadow. Jingle is very independent and happy to cuddle on her bed alone. Luna, is a scaredy cat. Can I legally call a dog a cat? I hope so, cause I just did (don't get me started on our outside cat, Arnold (named after Ginny Weasley's Pygmy Puff!), who I call Arn Dog. I have no idea why, I just do. Luna is afraid of everything. Plastic bags, the vacuum, fast movements, loud noises, etc. Ironically, she's NOT afraid of thunderstorms. Odd. Dog.

I told the pups I was going to bake them something. I had totally planned to make them homemade treats for Christmas, but I never got around to it. Oops.

So, it was finally time.

As I baked, here is what I saw.

" Hey, hey, watcha makin?"

"You done yet?"

(btw, this is the BEST photo I've gotten of Jingle in FOREVER!)

Once finished, I gave them a cookie.

They went BAZONKERS.

They would NOT stand still for me to get photos. Here is what happened.

(Prepare for very bad photography)

I guess you could say they liked them!

For the cookies, I went with doggy friendly ingredients.

You can see in this list here, that oats, eggs, and peanut butter are listed A-OK for doggies.

Mine are cr-razy for Peanut Butter.

I also went with Bananas, which are listed by the ASPCA as good for dogs.

Brown Rice flour easily digestible & easier on doggie bellies than white/wheat flour.
(Plus my Luna is allergic to wheat.)

There's a bit of cinnamon in there for flavor. That is listed as non-toxic by the ASPCA.

And those are all the ingredients!

Dogs don't need sugar, so there is none in these, however, I added a teeny bone shaped sprinkle (leftover from Halloween) to a few of them.

Mix 'em up, roll into balls, smash with glass, and bake!

I made mine tiny for my tiny dogs.

You can make yours larger, but you'll need to adjust baking times.

My dogs are just stupid crazy over these. Hope your furry friends are too!

Bonus?

You know exactly what is in these, so you won't have to worry when they recall dog treats, like just happened a couple days ago.

Package these up pretty & they make a great gift for the dog lover in your life!

Tina

Banana Nutter Poochies
recipe by Tina @ Sugar Bean Bakers

1  1/3 cup Brown Rice Flour*
1 large banana, peeled, and mashed
3/4 cup rolled oats
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 cup peanut butter
1 egg, beaten

*you can also use White or Whole Wheat flour if you aren't worried about gluten, but
Brown Rice Flour is a little easier on doggy bellies.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Add all ingredients to a mixer and mix until well blended.

Roll into small balls, about 1".

Place onto a parchment paper or slipat lined baking mat.

Flatten with the bottom of a glass. Once flattened they will be about 2".

These won't rise or spread, so you can fit lots on one sheet.

Bake for about 20-24 minutes, so they will be crunchy.

No matter how much begging happens, cool completely before giving the Poochies to your pooches.

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

If you won't use all of them in that time, freeze half. Allow to totally thaw before giving to your dogs.

Feed treats sparingly, of course.

The ASPCA recommends that treats should make up only 5% of your dog's daily food intake.

Different dogs are different however, so let your doggie sample one treat to make sure it doesn't upset his belly :)
